The reconstruction in 3D of the Iberian town of Ullastret, invited to the international congresses of Cleveland and Bologna

  • Museums and the Web is a congress about heritage and tecnology, celebrated the past  19 to 22 April, in Cleveland (EUA) and in which 331 institutions from 25 countries participated
  • The international conference Kainua, on the archaeological study of cities in antiquity, organized by the University of Bologna and sponsored by Unesco, was held from April 18 to 21

The virtual 3D reconstruction of the Iberian city of Ullastret, carried out within the framework of the Heritage in Action program of the Department of Culture and "la Caixa" Welfare Projects, has been invited to participate in the heritage and technology congress Museums and The Web, in Cleveland, and at the Kainua international conference in Bologna, about the archaeological study of ancient cities.

Museums and the Web is a congress on heritage and technology held from April 19 to 22 in Cleveland (USA), in which 331 institutions from 25 countries around the world participated, including institutions such as the British Museum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, J. Paul Getty Trust, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian Institution.

The international committee of this prestigious congress selected the reconstruction in 3D of the Iberian city of Ullastret as one of the proposals to incorporate to the program in the section of Demonstrations where, at a stand, the process of creation of the 3D and with the installation of glasses of virtual reality a demonstration to the assistants was realized.

This year is the first edition of this congress in which projects of virtual reality have been presented and for this new section, the experiences that have taken place the British Museum, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Stanford University and Brighton University , As well as the 3D virtual reconstruction of the Archeology Museum of Catalonia-Ullastret.

The 3D reconstruction project of the Iberian city of Ullastret has also participated in the international conference Kainua 2017 on the archaeological study of cities of antiquity, organized by the University of Bologna and sponsored by UNESCO. Ullastret has participated with the presentation of a paper detailing the virtual reconstruction process in 3D as well as the applications developed for the general public from this reconstruction: an immersive room and a virtual reality experience for glasses HTC Live. The paper will be published in the magazine Archeologia e Calcolatori del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Italy.  

In Catalonia, the project has also been recently presented at the Vic Digital Week (EweekVic), organized by the University of Vic, on April 26 with a stand where you could experiment with the glasses of virtual reality.

The Ullastret 3D project, developed by the archaeological teams of the Archeology Museum of Catalonia-Ullastret and the innovation of the Catalan Cultural Heritage Agency of the Department of Culture, allows the visitor to experience the experience of walking through the streets of Barcelona, An Iberian city more than 2200 years ago, reproduced with all the scientific rigor in the archaeological part and for maximum realism in the visual presentation. Since last summer, the visitor can also experience the experience and understand how this Iberian city was in the immersive room enabled in situ at the site of Ullastret.
