The Interpretation Centre for Rock Art, Muntanyes de Prades
The Rock Art of the Muntanyes de Prades is the result of cultural developments that took place in prehistory, the catalan area and the Mediterranean Hispanic one.
History of Muntanyes de Prades
Conca de Barberà, which spans some 649 km², is a territorially long Catalan district situated between the Francolí and Anguera river basins. These waterways are surrounded by mountains and altiplanes, over which looms the mountainous massif of the Muntanyes de Prades (Prades Mountains), some 1201 meters above sea level. This orographic cross-roads comprises an interesting natural location formed by an extensive network of peaks and gullies, where 15 rock art sequences have been discovered. Two such sequences correspond to Levantine art, while the rest are schematic or abstract representations.
The cave paintings speak to both our ancestors’ real and symbolic worlds. Thanks to their quality and uniqueness, the UNESCO has declared them World Heritage. One can see a large selection of these prehistoric images in the Interpretive Centre, along with an exhibition that serves to introduce this enigmatic art.
The Interpretation Centre for Rock Art
The Interpretation Centre for Rock Art, Muntanyes de Prades, inaugurated in September 2005, is housed in the old “Presó Nova” building, in Montblanc. The Interpretive Centre (CIAR) is a section of the Museu Comarcal de la Conca de Barberà (Conca de Barberà District Museum).
