Sant Miquel
Iberian settlement with a complex of structures highly adapted to the terrain’s morphology
Situated on a hill measuring some 100 m in height, on the point nearest the Ebro River, the Iberian settlement of Sant Miquel dates to the final phase of the Iberian Age (the last 25 years of the 2nd century BC-first half of the 1st century BC). It possessed two clearly defined systems of defence, which correspond to distinct stages of construction spaced a short time apart. With respect to construction and function, the settlement’s typology corresponds to that of a barrier settlement.
The strategic character of Sant Miquel Mountain explains why the site was used as a stronghold during the Spanish Civil War. Relics of this occupation can still be seen today in the form of trenches, machine gun nests, etc.
