El Casol de Puigcastellet

Folgueroles, Osona

This fortification was located on one of the first hills of the Guilleries region. From here the natural way in to the Vic plain and the lowlands of the Girona region along the course of the river Ter was controlled.

This fortification follows a preconceived urban layout and has been dubbed a barrier fortification due to its typology. It had a long strech of straight wall with a central tower built onto the back, and contained eleven walls separating areas used as dwellings or for storage.

The construction was only used for just over one generation, about 50 years, coinciding with the period of upheaval caused by the Roman Conquest of Iberia. The size of the construction and the short time it was occupied suggest that it was planned and built with help from a wider area.
