Port of Empúries
(L'Escala, Alt Empordà)
Empúries’ commercial activity required a port infrastructure that could accommodate naval traffic. In 1996, the CASC discovered several architectural structures to the east of the Neapolis, which they interpreted as the city’s Roman port.
We now know that Empúries’ port complex comprised, in addition to the port situated between the Neapolis and Palaiapolis, the port of Riells-La Clota, recently discovered under the current port of l’Escala. This structure was constructed on a foundation of rocks known as Muscleres Grosses.
