L'Ampolla
(L'Ampolla, Baix Ebre)
The Ebro Delta’s evolution, its continuously changing coastline, coupled with its sandy bed and general murkiness complicate underwater archaeological work. However, thanks to the creation of an Archaeological Map, a collection of Roman anchors was detected along the Delta’s northern flank, in the Gulf of Sant Jordi, confirming the presence of substantial nautical activity.
This area most likely corresponds to a point of exchange between open-sea vessels and fluvial ships, which navigated down the Ebro River distributing mercantile goods to inland settlements. Numerous archaeological findings uphold this argument, the most noteworthy being an artefact named zunxo, which formed part of a Roman anchor found in waters near l’Ampolla.
