El Vendrell
(El Vendrell, Baix Penedès)
The process of erosion evident at some points along this municipality’s beach causes the sand to disappear, revealing all manner of archaeological remains.
The CASC surveyed the site in 1993 and detected the presence of archaeological material with highly diverse chronologies, from a Massaliote amphora to Modern glazed pottery. Roman-Era remains are particularly abundant, as in the Greco-Italic and Dressel 1 amphoras from the Republican Period, or the Imperial-Age Dressel 2-4 and Dressel 20 amphoras. Particularly noteworthy are the receptacles used to transport Catalan wine near the change of the Era, such as Laietana 1, Pascual 1 and Dressel 2-4 amphoras. The typological and chronological heterogeneity of these materials suggests neighbouring Roman towns used this location as anchorage.
