Ebro River
(Baix Ebre, Montsià, Ribera d'Ebre)
The Ebro, the mighty fluvial tract that connects Tarragona’s inland regions with major ports such as Tortosa, is, potentially speaking, an extremely interesting underwater archaeological site.
Difficulties inherent in the river’s poor visibility and strong current complicate archaeological research. This was never more apparent than during the Centre d'Arqueologia Subaquàtica de Catalunya’s 1993 campaign in waters near Amposta, during which the CASC conducted the underwater planimetry of an oblique dock located along the riverbank.
When a section of the River was dredged in 1996, the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Archaeological Services, in collaboration with the CASC, monitored the procedure and catalogued archaeological material.
