Calonge
(Calonge, Baix Empordà)
In 1996, Sr. Damià Ponjoan discovered and declared four iron cannons from waters of Calonge beach. These cannons were found above the sand at a depth of 6 m. The CASC performed soundings in 1997 and confirmed the cannons were the site’s only archaeological remains, limiting work to documentation and planimetry. The cannons, which measured 3.20 m in length and had a maximum diameter of 68 cm, were completely incrusted with concretion, rendering it impossible to read any inscription thereon. This, along with the absence of other archaeological material, has impeded the dating of the site.
