Document Holdings

The Library’s holdings include various types of material: principally monographs, periodicals, non-book material, excavation journals and cartographic material.

The holdings are physically distributed across three rooms:

Reading Room: This room is open to the public and allows users to browse books, brochures and a section containing general works and reference materials, ordered and classified by a host of subjects: general archaeology, prehistory, Middle and Far East, Phoenicians and Punics, pre-Roman cultures, Greece, Rome, Late Antiquity, Middle and Modern Ages, North and South America, epigraphy, numismatics, anthropology, ethnography and museum studies.

Periodicals Archives: the MAC magazine and newspaper holdings have been compiled, in great part, thanks to the MAC exchange policy, which brings to the Library publications from museums and specialised centres the world over.

Reserve Room: Library renovations entailed the creation of a reserve holdings needed to store materials deemed valuable for their antiquity or rareness. Manuscripts and printed documents are stored in this reserve. In the manuscripts section, inventory consists of 15 boxes of excavation diaries (1908-1986) and other hand-written, graphic and photographic documentation concerning excavations. In addition to the diaries, therein lies a manuscript, a copy produced in Germany, which details the sections on antiques and numismatics from the first 13 volumes of España Sagrada by Enrique Florez.

The printed material section preserves works, published between the 16th and the beginning of the 19th centuries, which harbour special interest or cannot be found elsewhere. Furthermore, this section includes volumes, principally large format volumes, which contain prints and engravings of great artistic value, such as the Piranesi and Montfaucon collection. From these manuscripts, the oldest excavation diaries stand out, fruit of the work of great archaeologists such as Bosch Gimpera, Colominas, Duran i Sanpere and Pallarès.

To ensure all material remains in a good state of preservation, the Reserve Room is closed to the public.
