The Visigoths

Detall de sivella

Under reform (visitable)

In the early 5th century the first groups of Germanic peoples cross the Pyrenees. The territory of Catalonia becomes successively part of the visigoth kingdoms of Tolosa in the 5th century and Toledo in the 6th and 7th centuries. The Visigoths are a minority in relation to the Hispanic-Roman population. Nevertheless, they hold political, economic and religious power. In the early 8th century the Muslim occupation and the fall of the Visigoth kingdom mark the beginning of a period of significant political, military, social and economic changes. During the Middle Ages, Catalonia is divided between the Christian lands in the north, which are governed by counts, and the Islamic lands in the south and west, which form the upper area of Al-Andalus.

This hall displays the Hispanic-Visigothic collection of the Museum. This includes noteworthy elements such as the singular gold treasure of Torredonjimeno (Jaén).
