The Argar State. A different culture
4,000 years ago, the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula experienced radical changes. Many villages were destroyed and the ancestral cemeteries were abandoned. The crisis gave way to Argaric society. Their study suggests that this is the first state organization in Western Europe.
The new social organization takes its name from the site of the Argar (Almeria), discovered and excavated during nineteenth century by Henri and Louis Siret. Its life lasted about 650 years between 2200 and 1550 BC. During this time the territory expanded from an original nucleus between the rivers Almanzora (Almeria) and Guadalentín (Murcia) to cover an area similar to that of Catalonia.
