Prehistories
The origins
The technological advances that occurred in prehistory were as revolutionary as today's, although much more spread out over time. Humanity changed as a result of mastering fire, cutting stone and producing the first tools. These improvements helped to consolidate communities and stimulate their progress in material terms. Agriculture, stockbreeding and pottery were also truly revolutionary, leading to settlement, the accumulation of surpluses and the beginnings of trade.
Finally some groups were able to specialise in tasks other than the search for food per se, such as metallurgy and jewellery making, genuine luxury objects of the time. New needs led to new thoughts and increasingly more elaborate art forms and symbolism. Societies themselves evolved towards more complex models, with the emergence of the first hierarchies and the first town planning.
Little by little, prehistoric cultures welded together the collective soul of Europe into a definitive form. We are the direct heirs to that world.
