Phoenicians and Greeks
The Colonizations
It would be impossible to understand our situation today without a fundamental period of Mediterranean history. Between the 9th and 3rd centuries BC, the influence of the Phoenicians and Greeks on those people living along the coast dispersed the mists of prehistory once and for all. Indigenous societies joined the order of peoples with writing systems, discovered crucial technological advances for their economies and thereby achieved a high level of civilisation that, centuries later, would help them to take their place within the global community forged by Rome.
The Mediterranean, poetically defined as "the Bridge of the Blue Sea", became the route by which traders and seafarers passed from the east, spreading culture and civilisation to the western confines of the ancient world.
